Memorial Hermann Surgical Hospital has received the Summit Award 2010, which recognizes top performing facilities that maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction for 3 or more years.

Memorial Hermann Surgical facility was also one of eighty Press Gainey partners to receive this honor. Ten thousand health care facilities, including 50% of U.S. hospitals, currently partner with Press Gainey. They measure and improve the quality of care and have the largest database in the industry allowing facilities to benchmark their results against other organizations.

Memorial Herman Surgical Hospital Kingwood maintains a high level of patient satisfaction and would not have received this award without the dedication of its staff and physicians.


The 2nd Annual East End Park Student Photo contest is here again and up for grabs is $1000 dollars in cash prizes. The contest is open to all full time students. All entries will be judged in two categories, ages 13 and under and over 13. Students may submit up to five entries and there is no entry fee to pay.

The theme of this year’s contest is “Inspire Preservation through Beauty”. The deadline for entries is January 4, 2011 at midnight. Winners will be announced by February 1, 2011. The contest has the following restrictions:

  • Pictures must be taken inside Kingwood’s East End Park.
  • Pictures must be taken by submitting student.
  • No flora or fauna may be harmed in the taking of the picture.
  • By submitting your photo you agree to let it be showcased on EastEndPark.com
  • All submissions must be in jpeg format, 800 pixels wide and must include the students name in the file name. 

It is the hope of the contest to encourage students to use their cameras for the purpose of inspiring environmental preservation.


The Edward Baird Singer of the Year award has been given to Blair Doerge, a 2004 Lone Star College music graduate. Doerge was also awarded $1000 in cash and a scholarship to the Austrian Summer Opera Program at the annual Texoma Regional National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene.

For the last several months Doerge and Anne Heath-Welch, an adjunct music professor at LSC-Kingwood, diligently worked on a total of 14 songs in four different languages. She also worked with Jay Whatley, an associate professor of music and a collaborative pianist at LSC-Kingwood.

Doerge competed in two rounds against other singers at the regional competition. In the final round Doerge was among the three finalists that performed 15 minutes of vocals.

Lone Star College - Kingwood’s Student Art Show will be displaying the best art work in town! There will be more than 60 pieces on display including ceramics, sketches, paintings, photography and mixed media. Several items will be for sale and all proceeds will go directly to the talented students.

This showing will present the students and school with an opportunity to show off the tremendous quality of work being accomplished and showcases the different types of classes that are available to new students.

Studio art classes are required for the participants to be able to enter work. The final selection of work will be chosen by the guest juror Kaneem Smith, a Houston artist and art educator. She was on campus to present the awards to students at the grand opening Nov. 23 at 12:30 p.m.


Kingwood NCL Chapter to Hold Food Drive

When you hear a knock at your front door this November, it could be a member of the Kingwood or Atascocita Area National Charity League (NCL) coming by to ask for a donation to benefit clients of Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM). The four NCL Chapters - King Trails, Kingwood, Lake Houston and Livable Forest - will be helping HAAM meet the needs of families in 12 area zip codes.

National Charity League members will be asking for donations of the following: Stuffing mix, brownie mix, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, canned turkey gravy and green or yellow vegetables. They will also be accepting donations of new toys as well.

The National Charity League’s mission is to foster mother and daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership and cultural experiences.


Interested in a new career? Lone Star College - Kingwood will be holding free information sessions on their fire science and management programs and anyone interested is invited to attend.

These informative sessions for the fire science program will be held November 29 and December 7 at 7 p.m. in CLA 213, and sessions for the management program will be held November 30 at 7 p.m. and December 2 at 12:30 p.m. in ADM 112.

“The purpose of these information sessions is to provide potential students with information on both our fire science and management programs, the benefits of each program and who to contact for financial aid information and to register for programs,” said Linda Holcomb, chair of the business and professional office department.

Ellen Delap, owner of Professional-Organizer.com, and Leslie Sarmiento, owner of Interiors by Decorating Den, hosted a “Home for the Holiday Season” workshop on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. The free decorating workshop was held at the Homewood Suites in Kingwood Texas, and attendees were asked to bring canned goods for donation to the Society of St. Stephen Food Drive.

The Society of St. Stephens is a 501C3 community outreach program that serves people living in the local Kingwood area school districts. They are run strictly off of just volunteers and provide food and clothing to over 400 individuals as well as provide financial assistance to 20 families each week.
