$4000 Raised by Stacey's Dance Studio for Charity

Stacey's Dance Studio of Kingwood recently taught over 150 of their girls just how great it can be to spread the holiday spirit by shopping for someone other than themselves.  The Kingwood Strutters went on a spree at Target with $4000 and bought Christmas presents for many less fortunate.

Each Stacey's Dance Studio member adopted the charity of their choice and each girl earned the money they shopped with themselves. "They held bakes sales, ran lemonade stands, did chores and sold hand-crafts to raise the funds", said Tonya Thompson, Stacey's Dance Director. The girls bought the presents as well as wrapped them up.

Seventeen grandparents from the Pine Shadow Nursing Home in Porter and ten families from the KSBJ 89.3 Giving Tree were among those that received donations from the girls.

Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Game Design and Simulation Project development students have spent the fall semester working with Dr. Matt Gardner, the MIT scientist at EarthQuest. The students worked on applications to promote EarthQuest Institute’s involvement in the development of a theme park that will be located in New Caney.

The students met with Gardner on a monthly basis to get feedback on their progress-created games that will teach concepts of alternative energy sources and recycling in engaging and fun ways. The games created will be available on the EarthQuest website in spring 2011.

EarthQuest is a resort located approximately 25 miles north of Houston. It is scheduled to open to the public in 2011 or 2012. The resort will include a theme park, water park, hotel, conference center, and retail and office development.

Grand Champion Food Prize Awarded to Local Girl

Local student, Emily Pearson, recently entered her prize rabbit in the 2010 Youth Expo Harris County and although she tried her best, she and her rabbit did not make it to the winners circle. However, her baking skills proved to be much more successful!

In addition to the livestock entry, Emily entered her incredible recipe for Pecan Pie Cake in the food division and walked away as the Grand Champion Food Winner. With over 100 entries in her division the win felt very sweet! She also took home a 3rd Place ribbon for her green onions.

Emily's dad boasted on how hard she worked to prepare for this contest and made several test cakes in the weeks prior to ensure her cake was deliciously perfect. The whole experience has inspired Emily to want to cook more and her family is incredibly proud of her!
