The San Jacinto River should be much cleaner and ready for everyone to enjoy this May, but that has not always been the case. Items have been littering the river, such as plastic water bottles and Styrofoam cups, all winter.

Thanks to the Lone Star College-Kingwood students who discovered the magnitude of the river's litter problem, their cleanup efforts earlier this month have made a world of difference.

Amos Zimerman, 23, of Splendora and Karen Fingado, 46, of Kingwood both participated in the efforts to clean up the river and are both members of the Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Honor Student Organization. The Lone Star College-Kingwood Honors Student Organization is continually involved in nature preservation projects each year called Lowlands Projects. The project is typically limited to forested areas west of the college, but was extended to the river area this year.
