Kingwood Resident Baking Up Some Sweet Treats

February is upon us, bringing warmth in weather as the Spring draws near, and warming hearts as we take time to cherish those we love on Valentine’s day. One Kingwood resident is dishing up sweet surprises for the love struck holiday, all from her Cakewalk Bakery.

Ashley Wenner is the owner of the 2 month old pastry and cake shop the Cakewalk Bakery, located at 4003 Rustic Woods Drive. While her business is fairly young, her love of baking has been rising for years, beginning in the kitchen with her grandmother and great-grandmother. She pursued her passion and after graduating from Kingwood High School in 2002 she became a pastry chef under the instruction and training from the Alain and Marie LeNorte Culinary Institute in Houston.

This young baker enjoys her work and making cakes for residents to enjoy. “Baking is a lot of fun and I am very excited to have my own bakery where the community can visit and find any kind of pastry, pies, tarts or cake they may be looking for,” Wenner shared. She is looking forward to creating specialty cakes and treats for the Holidays, with King Cakes for Mardi Gras on February 16th and other specialties for Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

Wenner has spent time working in a variety of bakeries, gaining experience not only in creating cakes and pastries but also in running a shop. Before Hurricane Ike she was living in Galveston and working in Moody Gardens’ pastry department, but with the damage Hurricane Ike brought she was displaced from her home and the business was damaged.

In a sweet turnaround Wenner found herself back home in Kingwood. “When I moved back to Kingwood,” Wenner realized, “there truly were not any bakeries for me to work at so I started to develop the idea of opening my own place.” Her planning started in October and a few months later her dream was a reality. “Everything else fell into place,” she said.
