Spring Forward for Daylight Saving Time: March 14

Each Spring, we move our clocks forward by one hour during the night in order to capture the convenience that extra light brings during the Spring and Summer seasons. Friendswood Development Company is reminding Kingwood residents to remember to do just that at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14.

Daylight Saving Time actually affects you in more ways than simply confusing your schedule. By making the adjustment, we are allowing ourselves to use less energy in lighting out homes. This energy-saving orientation was the original intent of the U.S. when Daylight Saving Time was instituted during World War I and later when the length of Daylight Saving Time was standardized in 1966.

Oakhurst at Kingwood parents of elementary-school aged children should take note of New Caney I.S.D.’s Second Annual Dyslexia Interactive Parent Night on Tuesday, March 9th. Kingwood Family Welcomes Home Haitian Adoptee

Ernest and Debra Parker of Kingwood had been working diligently for two years to bring home their now newly adopted son, Ronel, from Haiti. With endless red tape looming over their heads during the process, the recent devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince was anything but encouraging.

At the onset of the earthquake, the Parkers feared for Ronel's safety as well as the processing of the adoption papers, as they were in the second stage of the adoption. After finding Ronel was safe, the Haitian government allowed for humanitarian parole, giving Ronel the ability to come home based on the stage of the adoption process the Parkers were in.

Kingwood Resident Baking Up Some Sweet Treats

February is upon us, bringing warmth in weather as the Spring draws near, and warming hearts as we take time to cherish those we love on Valentine’s day. One Kingwood resident is dishing up sweet surprises for the love struck holiday, all from her Cakewalk Bakery.

Ashley Wenner is the owner of the 2 month old pastry and cake shop the Cakewalk Bakery, located at 4003 Rustic Woods Drive. While her business is fairly young, her love of baking has been rising for years, beginning in the kitchen with her grandmother and great-grandmother. She pursued her passion and after graduating from Kingwood High School in 2002 she became a pastry chef under the instruction and training from the Alain and Marie LeNorte Culinary Institute in Houston.

Hope Calendar Raises Money for It's My Heart

One local resident is using her photography skills to raise money and awareness for children in the community. Debi Gomez, owner of Life’s Images Photography, has been photographing newborns and children since the birth of her first child. What began as a hobby at home soon grew into a business where she could capture life’s moments for families in every stage, from engagement to maternity to the family growing with children. But she has a wider scope in her photography – she seeks to give back to the residents in Kingwood, Spring, The Woodlands and surrounding areas by helping raise money for local charities.

Each year Gomez selects a charity and produces a calendar to sell and raise funds to benefit the selected charity. Now in its third year the Calendar of Hope has raised over $15,000 for area charities. “I developed the idea for the Hope Calendar because I wanted to be more involved in a charity project and I wanted more people to be involved as well,” Gomez said.
